Throughout the country’s history, at Christmas, Greek families would decorate wooden boats to welcome their sailor husbands and sons back from the sea, safe from harm. Today, the tradition still stands.Christmas in Greece is a festive time for families to come together, a time steeped in customs of the church and cultural traditions. Unique foods, and rituals set Greek Christmas apart. Mischievous goblins, Kallikantzaroi emerge during the holiday season and cause trouble and add playfulness to the holiday spirit, children go from house to house, singing traditional carols, kalanda, in exchange for treats or small gifts, and lights and music are everywhere. This month Greek Wonders invites you to a series of traditional Greek deserts for the holidays to celebrate the season- do join us!
On Christmas Eve, packs of children go door to door, singing kalanta, carols announcing the birth of baby Jesus and spreading holiday cheer; in return, households thank them for the happy blessings with sweets, money, or small gifts.
