Κυριακη των Βαιων (Palm Sunday)

Βάγια, Βάγια των βαγιών, τρώνε ψάρι και κολιό, κι ως την άλλη Κυριακή με το κόκκινο αυγό!

"Vagia, Vagia of the villages, they eat fish and mackerel, and by next Sunday with the red egg!"Palm Sunday is one of the two days of the Great Lent during which it is allowed for the faithful to eat fish. The day marks Christ's entry into Jerusalem and holds a special place in the church tradition. During Lent, a period of 40 days of abstinence, prayer, and penance the faithful follow a strict fast, but Palm Sunday is among the few days when fish is allowed, due to the significance of the day and the celebration.

The symbol of the fish has deep significance in Greek Orthodox tradition. The word "ΙΧΘΥΣ"(pronounced "Ichthys") is the Greek word for "fish," and it became an important Christian symbol. It was used as an acronym for the phrase:

Ιησούς Χριστός, Θεού Υιός, Σωτήρ which translates to: Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.

This acronym was used by early Christians as a secret symbol to identify themselves, particularly during times of persecution.
