Αgios Georgios and the Slaying of the Dragon

The Saint’s most celebrated miracle is the Slaying of the Dragon. According to tradition, in the vicinity of Cyrene, in what is now Libya, there was a dragon that guarded a spring and prevented the village from being watered, while devouring passersby.
To appease the dragon, the villagers sent it a child each day as food, chosen by lot. God took pity on them and sent Saint George to destroy the dragon, on a day when it was about to devour the beautiful only daughter of the local ruler. The Saint, after a terrible duel with the dragon, killed it and saved the beautiful girl. Then, her father, as well as the entire village, who were pagans, were baptized Christians.
