The district of Prespa lies in a large upland basin at am altitude of 2,800 ft. The two lakes of Lesser and Great Prespa are in the middle of the basin. The region is shared between Greece, North Macedonia and Albania and is known for its churches and monasteries built in harmony with the environment, some of which date as fare back as the 11th century through the 19th century. The area is known for its fauna and flora; the geography and climate, make Prespa a unique breeding and overwintering place for a wide range of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and insects.
